This book describes the principles and practices of thyroid gland disorders. Thyroid disease is a medical condition that affects the function of the thyroid gland (the endocrine organ found at the front of the neck that produces thyroid hormones). The symptoms of thyroid disease vary depending on the type. There are four general types following as hypothyroidism (low function) caused by not having enough thyroid hormones, hyperthyroidism (high function) caused by having too much thyroid hormones, structural abnormalities, most commonly an enlargement of the thyroid gland, tumors which can be benign or cancerous, and abnormal thyroid function tests without any clinical symptoms. This book is divided into 31 chapters which include anatomical and functional embryology and histology of thyroid gland, physiology of thyroid axis, manifestations of thyroid hormone deficiency and laboratory evaluation, hypothyroidism, congenital hypothyroidism, optimal thyroid replacement in hypothyroidism, Graves’ disease, neonatal thyrotoxicosis, pediatric Graves’ disease, subacute thyroiditis, simple or nontoxic goiter, solitary thyroid nodule, medullary thyroid cancer, amiodarone-induced thyroid dysfunction, endocrine disruptors and thyroid disease and sick euthyroid syndrome. This book is benefit for the readers in enhancing their understanding and knowledge regarding thyroid disorders.
